Review: IQ by Joe Ide 5* Genius!

IQ by Joe Ide – 5* Genius!

My review:

Wow, Wow! Where to start, I read hundreds of books a year and when I absolutely love a book, I call it 5* Genius! This means a) I will never part with it or lend it to ANYONE! & b) I will buy multiple copies as presents for friends and family etc. it doesn’t happen as often as I’d like. But they can’t all be great eh?

The novel opens with a very dark and chilling prologue, we are aware Boyd is a tempting to kidnap a young woman/girl. By the end of chapter one we can clearly see how Isaiah Quintabe solves his cases & dilemmas that pop up along the way. Isaiah Quintabe also known as IQ is a remarkable and unique character. he has very high levels of intelligence and insight yet he lives in abject poverty, much like a Sherlock Holmes from the ghetto! The reason I picked this novel is because I absolutely love novels with diversity and this one has it by the bucket loads! There are a variety of characters from all walks of life and circumstances, it truly reflects society and that is what makes it so damn good!

The novel is written as two stories of Isaiah’s life, one the one hand we have the story of his previous life. The circumstances that made him the man he is and how he learned to overcome such obstacles. The story is one of redemption for Isaiah and I found this very moving. It is drip fed through the entire book so expertly! The other story is of the case Isaiah has taken in the modern day. A case which blew me away! A case that involves rap moguls, killer dogs, violence, danger and of course requires a sharp mind to crack!

Isaiah Is such a complex character, I could talk about him all night. My poor husband has heard all about him…………all day! but he’s not the only one to be written so on point. Black the knife aka Calvin Wright is the rap mogul at the centre of the case, locked up in his house, with threats on his life, his sanity slowly begins to crumble. The dedicated hitman is so well written and detailed but no spoilers, so no more from me! Dodson is Isaiah’s partner and has been with him since the early days, as detailed in the reflective chapters. A past made up of gangs, drugs and violent crime, it makes for one hell of a read! This book truly has some of the most amazing characters written! even Blasé!

My biggest question so far……….is ………….is this a series? I really really hope so. The Epilogue leaves an opening (also left me open mouthed!). This novel reads right up to the very last page! I sincerely hope there is more & I will be first in the queue for an IQ2. A fantastic 5* Genius read! It won’t disappoint!

*hugely recommend!

The blurb:

A resident of one of LA’s toughest neighborhoods uses his blistering intellect to solve the crimes the LAPD ignores.
East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the neighborhood’s high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, lost children unrecovered. But someone from the neighborhood has taken it upon himself to help solve the cases the police can’t or won’t touch.
They call him IQ. He’s a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence. He charges his clients whatever they can afford, which might be a set of tires or a homemade casserole. To get by, he’s forced to take on clients that can pay.
This time, it’s a rap mogul whose life is in danger. As Isaiah investigates, he encounters a vengeful ex-wife, a crew of notorious cutthroats, a monstrous attack dog, and a hit man who even other hit men say is a lunatic. The deeper Isaiah digs, the more far reaching and dangerous the case becomes.
