Q&A:

Q) For the readers, can you talk us through your background and the synopsis of your new novel?

A) I have a military background. United States Army, precisely. I was a military brat and then I enlisted myself. But I also have a poverty-stricken background. It wasn’t pretty in either place, leading to the setting of PROJECT TERROR. The housing project where the story takes place is a place that my mother forbid me to hang, but of course, I did anyway. I watched the FBI and DEA take out whole communities with drug busts and sought to cover that in PROJECT TERROR. But I add a twist. I wondered what that big drug bust would have looked like if an undercover agent moved into an apartment in the project months before the bust. So, I tossed him into the book and crafted a plot around him, making for a delightful crime thriller (if that is possible).

Q) Can you talk us through the journey from idea to writing to publication?

A) It was an process like no other. I am not a typer, so I hand wrote the book on notepads and blank paper. I then had it typed before submitting it to publishers, and ultimately signing with Prodigy Gold Books. The team there was similar to boot camp instructors. They warned me of the process before signing me and assuring that I was ready for the editing process and the pre-publication promotion, and even this interview and publicity phase. I didn’t know that so much went into this process, but I am here and looking forward to getting my second novel all typed up.

Q) What are your favourite authors and recommended reads?

A) My favorite authors are Iceberg Slim and Walter Mosley. I like the way they depict stories about the struggle and success of urban communities. They played a role in forcing me to write a story from my angle.

Q) What were your childhood/teenage favourite reads?

A) My teenaged reads were text books and the early Dr. Suess and Bernstein Bears classics.

Q) What has been your favourite moment of being a published author?

A) My favorite moment was finally being signed and the start of the editing process. Having a professional point out plot holes and character flaws were a gut-punch, but worth it. I am an amateur boxer of sorts, so I can take a punch.

Q) Who has been your source of support/encouragement, throughout the writing process?

A) My support comes from my family and friends, and my Prodigy team. My mother is my rock, along with one of my sisters.

#BookReview Innocent Blood by @DStuartDavies #2 #DIPaulSnow #Trilogy

cover
Innocent Blood by David Stuart Davies
Synopsis:

A child’s body found in woodland. Parents torn apart by grief. But this is only the first victim in a series of apparently motiveless crimes. Detective Inspector Paul Snow, heading the enquiry, must discover the pattern and reveal the chilling truth as a cunning and violent murderer becomes desperate and even more unpredictable. Haunted by secrets of his own, the complex DI Snow races against the clock, following a murderous trail that leads all the way to a dark and shocking climax.

Innocent Blood, set in Yorkshire in the 1980s, is the second in the gritty series featuring DI Paul Snow and maintains the high level of tension and dramatic surprises of the first, Brothers in Blood.

My review:

Innocent Blood is the second novel in the DI Paul Snow trilogy! The plot follows a series of child murders in Yorkshire in the 1980s. Snow is still battling to keep his secret and the case grows more and more intense.
The case will strike close to Snow’s secret. Can he maintain his cover?

The prologue opens in autumn 1984, with a drunk driver involved in a coach crash. There are a series of children’s screams and you quickly become aware, this is no ordinary crash!

Spring 1985, Snow is leading the arrest on a violent murderer. When a call comes in about a missing little girl! Snow arrives at the parent’s house to discover their nine year old daughter Gillian has been missing overnight. It isn’t long before a call comes in and a body matching the description has been found at Mollicar woods.

The body is badly beaten and bruised. Pathologist Chris McKinnon ascertains the death is via strangulation, with no obvious sexual motive.
What is the motive? Who murders young girls and leaves their bodies in the woods?

As the reader we become aware Snow, is still battling his demons. To hide his homosexual feelings, this is something that will lead Snow, down a dark path! There are a series of chapters from the killers perspective, they make for haunting reading but offer little in the way of motive. What is it, that this killer wants the police to see?

A week passes with no progress and then the killer strikes again! Snow needs to fine the motive and quickly before more young girls are snatched and killed! Eventually, through further investigation Snow uncovers the pattern/motive. When he does, it becomes apparent it ties in with the coach crash! With two survivors left, Snow must protect their lives at all costs.
But deep in the shadows, another disturbed man lurks and he wants revenge on Snow……..

This novel sets the series up perfectly for the third in the series Blood Rites. Which is set to be released this November 2017.
A thoroughly good historical crime fiction read! 5*

The Art Of Fear by Pamela Crane

Synopsis:

A dead father, a sex-trafficked daughter, and a cunning killer hiding deadly talents in apparent suicide.

From award-winning author Pamela Crane comes a terrifying tale of small-town secrets and murder.

Ari Wilburn’s life ended long ago—the day she let her little sister die in a tragic accident. Crippled with self-blame and resented by her parents, Ari stumbles through life…and into an unlikely clue that casts doubt on whether the death was accidental.

A psychological wreck, Ari joins a suicide support group where she meets Tina, a sex-enslaved escapee who suspects foul play in her father’s death. In a pursuit of justice, Tina drags Ari into playing a dangerous game with the killer.

Faced with a murderous wake-up call, and desperate to salve her conscience, Ari’s investigation fuels the killer’s desire to see her dead.

Will Ari find closure and stop a killer, or make those she loves suffer?

My review:

This novel opens up and you are instantly thrown right into the pace, this novel is set at. It is dark, violent and at times, depraved! There are multitude of characters, to get your head around, so make sure you pay attention. You have been warned!

The first character we fully get to know is Ari, she is wallowing in grief, due to the death of her sister Carli. Ari is awash with self-blame and I felt this was mainly due to her mother’s complete and utter rejection of her. Her mother so desperate for justice appears to have made Ari the target of her anger! I found this very emotive to read, you instantly feel sympathy for her situation and empathy for her own self-blame.

Ari set up the Triad Suicide support group, doe to battling her own demons within. This group is a mixture of awkward young people, battling their issues with little in the way of support and guidance from outside the group. At the group, a new member arrives in the form of Tina Alvarez, who has recently been bereaved herself. Her father having committed suicide, leaving her to find the body. But Tina doesn’t believe it was suicide and Tina wants answers…….

The unlikely pair form a ‘soul sister’ bond, on the basis of their shared pain and experiences and set out to investigate Tina’s fathers suicide. With some minor assistance from Detective Moody. But this will not prove easy, because the Alvarez family harbour, some deep dark, dark secrets………..

I felt this novel had a Thelma and Louise feel to it and would also appeal to the older YA market. Recommended! 4*

Author bio:

Pamela Crane is a professional juggler. Not the type of juggler who can toss flaming torches in the air, but a juggler of four kids, a writing addiction, a horse rescuer, and a book editor by trade. She lives on the edge (ask her Arabian horse about that—he’ll tell you all about their wild adventures while trying to train him!) and she writes on the edge. Her characters and plots are her escape from the real world of dirty diapers and cleaning horse stalls, and the masochist in her thrives off of hurting her characters to create an entertaining tale.

New Release: What you don’t know by Joann Chaney 4* Out Tomorrow!

What You Don't Know

What you don’t know by Joann Chaney

My review:

This novel is dark, vulgar and utterly creepy! Written brilliantly.
The majority of the novel is spent 7 years after the discovery of 31 bodies on the property of Jacky. The novel moves around 3 central characters and their journeys when a copycat killer stalks anyone with a connection to the original crime.
Hoskins is the burnout cop, struggling to hold his life together.
Sammie is the ruthless reporter, willing to do anything for a story.
Gloria is the creepy wife of Jacky, as she stands by him we wonder if she knew & why she is she so strange?
Jacky is terrifying as the depraved serial killer and is horror movie worthy with his torture murders and his obsessional/creepy mannerisms.
All together it is an amazing debut novel and a thoroughly scary read!

*I received an Ebook copy via netgalley in return for an honest review.

The blurb:

The last victims of an infamous serial killer on death row may be the ones he didn’t kill. Seven years ago, Detective Paul Hoskins and his larger-than-life partner solved one of the biggest serial murder cases of the decade. They dug up 33 bodies in a crawl space belonging to the beloved Jacky Seever, a pillar of the community and a successful businessman. Sammie Peterson was the lead reporter on the case. Her byline was on the front page of the newspaper every day. Seever’s wife, Gloria, claimed to be as surprised as everyone else.

Today, Hoskins has been banished to cold cases, Sammie is selling make-up at the mall, and Gloria is trying to navigate a world where she can’t escape condemnation. And Seever? He’s watching the show.

But when a series of new murders occur, and the victims are all somehow connected to Seever, Gloria is once again thrust into the spotlight, while Hoskins and Sammie realize this may be their chance to get their lives back, even if it means forfeiting their humanity in the process.
