Wrecked
Wrecked by Joe Ide ~ IQ #3
Synopsis:

Isaiah Quintabe – IQ for short – has never been more successful, or felt more alone. A series of high-profile wins in his hometown of East Long Beach have made him so notorious that he can hardly go to the corner store without being recognized. Dodson, once his sidekick, is now his full-fledged partner, hell-bent on giving IQ’s PI business some real legitimacy: a Facebook page, and IQ’s promise to stop accepting Christmas sweaters and carpet cleanings in exchange for PI services.

So when a young painter approaches IQ for help tracking down her missing mother, it’s not just the case Isaiah’s looking for, but the human connection. And when his new confidant turns out to be connected to a dangerous paramilitary operation, IQ falls victim to a threat even a genius can’t see coming.

Waiting for Isaiah around every corner is Seb, the Oxford-educated African gangster who was responsible for the death of his brother, Marcus. Only, this time, Isaiah’s not alone. Joined by a new love interest and his familiar band of accomplices, IQ is back – and the adventures are better than ever.

Wrecked/IQ Playlist:

For the US release of Wrecked, knowing I couldn’t blog a review. I decided to host something a little bit different and I HOPE unique!
This is my Wrecked/IQ playlist…………

1) 2pac – Never Had A Friend Like Me
Perfect IQ & Dodson track.
To me this was the easiest choice, The series had to have a 2pac track and this one perfectly sums up the relationship between IQ & Dodson!

2) Drake – Take Care feat Rihanna
Perfect IQ & Grace song! ~ Don’t wish to accidentally provide spoilers, so I guess you’ll have to check back once you’ve read Wrecked!

3) Warren G – Regulate feat Nate Dogg
This would illustrate the world IQ lives in.

4) Mobb Deep – Survival Of The Fittest.
This is the perfect track for WRECKED as an individual title.
I LOVE this song!
This is my favourite on the list!

5) Dr.Dre – The Message feat Mary J Blige
Perfect IQ & Marcus track.
Covers the pain of bereavement of a brother.

***This playlist is NOT endorsed by the author/publishers, nor was I paid to compile it.
It is simply just a blogger/fan playlist to share on social media platforms, to celebrate the release of Wrecked and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and recommendations too***

THE TIMES CRIME BOOK OF THE MONTH: ‘Full of humour, originality and high-quality writing’

East Long Beach. The LAPD is barely keeping up with the high crime rate. Murders go unsolved, the elderly are being mugged, children go missing. But word has spread: if you’ve got a case the police can’t – or won’t – touch, Isaiah Quintabe will help you out.

They call him IQ. He’s a loner and a high school dropout, his unassuming nature disguising a relentless determination and a fierce intelligence. His clients pay him whatever they can afford, a new set of tyres or some homemade muffins. But now he needs a client who can pay. And the only way to that client is through a jive-talking, low-life drug dealer he thought he’d left behind. Then there’s the case itself. A drug-addled rap star surrounded by a crew of flunkies who believes his life is in danger; and a hit man who even other hit men say is a lunatic. If he solves this case, IQ can put right a mistake he made long ago. If not it won’t just be the hit man coming after him …

WINNER of the ANTHONY AWARD for Best Debut, the SHAMUS AWARD for BEST FIRST P.I. NOVEL. the MACAVITY AWARD for Best First Novel; SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2017 EDGAR AWARD and STRAND CRITICS AWARD.

Righteous
Righteous by Joe Ide ~ IQ #2
Synopsis:

‘In a way, the hate felt good. You were righteous, godlike, the dispenser of justice . . .’
Super-smart sleuth Isaiah Quintabe – IQ to his friends – has built a mostly respectable life for himself, helping out friends and neighbours when he can and taking the occasional case to make ends meet. But there is one mystery that still haunts him almost ten years later – did his brother really die in a hit-and-run or was there more to the story behind his death?

IQ has been approached by his brother’s former girlfriend Sarita, whose younger sister, an erratic DJ and gambling addict, has gone missing in Las Vegas – with a frightening loan shark, Chinese Triad gangsters, and her own deadbeat boyfriend hot on her tail. Accompanied once more by his fast-talking, don’t-call-me-a-sidekick partner Dodson, IQ heads off for the casinos and massage parlours of Las Vegas. His quest takes an unexpected turn when he meets a criminal mastermind who knows something about the murky circumstances that surrounded his brother’s death. But when Isaiah learns the truth, what will he do with it?

@poisonedpen #FBLiveBookEvent Nov 2nd @Connellybooks @JoeIdeTweets #Bosch #IQ #AwardWinning #CrimeFiction

From my research and following certain authors careers and events. Also desperately trying to source, signed copies of American authors. I discovered this AMAZING book store in the US. They regularly run book events, they sell and distribute signed copies worldwide and they even, live stream their book events!!!!!
What more could a bookworm or book blogger ask for?

The rates for P&P/shipping are reasonable and their selection of signed copies is immense! Not only that, but by offering the reader the opportunity to live view the event! You don’t miss out no matter where you happen to live!

The event I have chosen to feature on my blog, is as recently as yesterday!
Thursday 2nd November, the Poisoned Pen Bookstore welcomed two award winning, crime fiction authors, Michael Connelly & Joe Ide.

To view the events live stream click the link below:
https://www.facebook.com/238297496213972/videos/1607459699297738/
Isn’t this an amazing idea! To catch all their events via live stream, just like their Facebook page!

Now, lets talk about the novels!

Two Kinds Of Truth by Michael Connelly
Synopsis:

The brand new Harry Bosch thriller. Crime fiction doesn’t get any better than this

Harry Bosch works cold cases, helping out the under-funded San Fernando police department. When a double murder at a local pharmacy is called in, Bosch is the most seasoned detective on the scene.

But with experience, come the ghosts of long-forgotten crimes. A death row inmate claims Bosch framed him, and that new DNA evidence proves it.

The LAPD investigators say the case is watertight, leaving Bosch out in the wilderness to clear his name and keep a sadistic killer behind bars.

There’s only one person he can trust to help prove his innocence: Micky Haller.

As both cases tangle around him, Bosch learns there are two kinds of truth: the kind that won’t die and the kind that kills.

I am a huge fan of Joe Ide’s writing style and his IQ series. I am most definitely a #FanGirl of this author & protagonist!

My review:

This novel had me gripped and from page 57, I already knew, Joe Ide has written another 5* Genius novel! Isiah aka IQ, for readers new to the series, is the complex protagonist of Joe Ide’s genius novel. IQ is the Sherlock Holmes from the ghetto, with a golden heart and an intellect that outwits and manipulates, to bring justice within his local community of LA. IQ is articulate and was destined for Harvard University when tragedy struck! I am a huge fan of crime fiction and IQ is easily on my list of favourite characters.
Righteous is the second in the IQ series.

Isiah Quintabe is back, the novel picks up right where it left off. With the discovery of the car used in the hit and run that killed Isiah’s big brother Marcus. This leads Isiah into a path of revenge and the dying need for vigilante justice. Within this plot we see another side to Isiah, one not yet explored we see his self-reasoning and questioning as he struggles to unravel the mystery surrounding his brother’s death.

Aside from his own personal situation, he has an ongoing case, one that will similarly lead right to the heart of the consequences of violence! After receiving a call from Sarita (Marcus’s girlfriend at time of his death); he is thrust into a complex case involving gambling debts/addiction, human trafficking, gangs, violence and ultimately gang warfare. The characters surrounding the many different gangs are exceptionally well written. They all have depth, a back story and are incredibly iconic. This is a case where we see IQ with his back against the wall. Gangs are notoriously known for being built upon secrecy, violence and loyalty.
Where betrayal is a capital crime and violence is meted out with ease.
An environment where gangbangers are always scheming and threatening, so who can you trust?

The novel goes on to explain how and why gangs are formed and the inner working of triads, cartels and street gangs. But this is done within the story telling from a variety of perspectives. I felt as though I was in LA/Vegas watching it all unfold. Throughout this novel, I had an enduring feeling IQ would suffer emotionally upon the discovery of Marcus’s past and the facts surrounding his death.
This kept tension throughout the novel and moved me to tears at times.
Don’t think because this is an action packed read, it lacks an emotional edge!

This novel is not only a sensational read, I found its message rather inspiring.
Violence begets violence and harms all it touches.
I highly recommend this novel 5* Genius!
